Indian dance choreographer Jani Master (Shaik Jani Basha; born 2 July 1982) specialises in Telugu and Tamil films. He has also appeared in Hindi and Kannada films. He choreographs for a variety of dance forms, but is best known for western and ethnic styles.

Early Life and Career

Jani’s career in the film industry began as a dancer in Telugu films and ETV’s Telugu reality dance show Dhee Ultimate Dance Show. He then got his first choreography opportunity in 2009 for the Telugu film Drona. His breakthrough as a choreographer began when actor Ram Charan entrusted him with choreographing a dance sequence for the 2012 Telugu film Racha. Ram Charan subsequently consistently chose him as the choreographer for all his films. Jani has also extended his choreographic skills to other prominent actors such as Pawan Kalyan, Allu Arjun, N. T. Rama Rao Jr., Ram Pothineni and Ravi Teja. He has even expressed his admiration for Ram Charan in one of his songs.

In 2014, Bollywood actor Salman Khan hired Jani Master as choreographer for his film Jai Ho. He has also choreographed for various award ceremonies. Jani continues to work as a choreographer for feature films. He has played key roles as choreographer and mentor in two television reality dance shows. His achievements include wins at prestigious awards such as the Filmfare Awards, CineMAA Awards and South Indian International Movie Awards. Since 2017, he has been a judge on a number of reality dance shows on Telugu television, including Star Maa’s Neethone Dance.

In 2018, he showcased his choreography skills in the film MLA. In the same year, he assisted Prabhudeva on the Tamil song “Rowdy Baby” from the film Maari 2. The song garnered huge recognition and the choreography went viral across the Indian subcontinent and beyond.

Jani continued to enjoy success, once again winning recognition in 2020 for his choreography in the song “Butta Bomma” from the Telugu film Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. The distinctive rolling steps from the music video became a cult move, copied by numerous celebrities and millions of people across various social media and short video platforms. The song was also very popular.

Controversies

According to The Hindu, The move came after a First Information Report was filed against choreographer Shaik Jani Basha, popularly known as Jani Master, for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman.

After a complaint was filed against the Jana Sena Party for allegedly sexually abusing a female colleague, the Jana Sena Party acted swiftly and directed choreographer A.K. Jani alias Jani Master to stay away from party activities with immediate effect.

The party issued a notice to this effect and said the order was issued on the basis of a police case. The order will come into force with immediate effect, the statement added.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Cyberabad police have filed a Zero First Information Report (FIR) against choreographer Shaikh Jani Basha alias Jani Master for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman.

Police said the woman was also a choreographer. The victim, who had been working closely with the accused for the past few months, said in her police complaint that she was sexually harassed by Jani during outdoor shoots.

Meanwhile, the Film Chamber of Commerce will hold a press conference today on the sexual harassment case against Maestro (choreographer) Jani, which will essentially involve addressing the insensitive manner in which some news channels have revealed the identity of the victim.
