Sarah Mateke Biography:  Kampala, (UG):- Kisoro District Member of Parliament and Defence Minister Sarah Mateke Nyirabasi has passed away. She was 50 years old.

 

According to family sources, Mateke, who was also the Minister of Youth and Child Affairs before her current position, died on Saturday morning after suffering a heart attack.

 

Her father Philemon Mateke, also a former Minister of Regional Affairs, said she was rushed to Mengo Hospital in Kampala where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi was born on July 15, 1974 in Chahisab Sub-County, Kisoro County, Kigezi Region to politician Philemon Mateke (father), who was a former Regional Minister for the State.

 

 

She attended Sesemme Integrated School and then Maryhill High School for her secondary education. She then transferred to Bugema University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

 

Mateke also completed a Masters in Public Health from the same university and a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration and Management from Uganda Christian University.

 

 

She founded the Nyirabashitsi Foundation, an organisation which enables children to attend boarding school from grades one to six.

Mateke held public office as Deputy Town Clerk in Kisoro Municipal Council. In 2021, she ran for the women’s parliamentary seat for Kisoro district in western Uganda, defeating then-incumbent Rose Kabageni.

 

She was appointed Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development (Child and Youth Affairs), replacing Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi.

 

 

Earlier this year, following President Museveni’s cabinet reshuffle, Nyirabashitsi, a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), was appointed Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs (Defence).

 

At the time of her death, she was the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Makerere Metropolitan Management Institute, Metropolitan International University in Kampala.
